Worthington Street and the surrounding blocks, sometimes called the entertainment district, which is the one stretch with several venues close enough to walk between.
Does MGM Springfield change the picture?
It should. The casino opened downtown in 2018 with bars and restaurants inside, which gives the area an anchor it did not have before.
Is downtown Springfield, Massachusetts walkable?
The downtown core is, from Worthington Street down toward Main and the casino. Beyond that the city spreads out and driving takes over.
What is Springfield known for?
Basketball. The game was invented here in 1891, and the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame sits on the riverfront by Interstate 91.
Would people go to Northampton instead?
Some would. Northampton is twenty minutes up the valley and has a dense, well-liked downtown that pulls the Five Colleges crowd.
Does Springfield's college population matter?
Less than you would expect. Western New England, AIC and Springfield College are all here, but none dominates the downtown the way a flagship campus would.
