Santa Pub Crawls
Iowa City’s SantaCon brings the University of Iowa’s beloved bar culture and Hawkeye holiday spirit to December in the most celebrated college town in the Midwest. The Pedestrian Mall and the surrounding bar district are the heart of Iowa City nightlife and when SantaCon fills these streets with Santas the combination of University of Iowa energy, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop creative culture, and the excellent local bars creates a holiday celebration that is genuinely one of the best in the Big Ten.
Iowa City has been named one of the best college towns in America repeatedly and the SantaCon reflects the quality and creativity of a community built around one of the great public universities in the country. The Santa costume competition draws on the creative energy of a writing, arts, and academic community and the entries tend to be funnier, more conceptual, and more committed than the average SantaCon city.
December in Iowa City is cold, typically ranging from 15 to 25 degrees at night. The Iowa winter is serious and the Pedestrian Mall bar community is well-equipped to generate the warmth and energy that makes a great winter pub crawl night. Hawkeye black and gold Santas are strongly encouraged.
