In 1900, Joseph Yaccarino arrived, kicking and screaming, from Italy with his parents and eleven siblings. Having learned to walk, talk, and eat solids, he made a name for himself – “Biggie”, as it chances – as a comedian in the 1930s. In 1941, someone told him the world was the mollusc of his choice – and, with great prescience, he chose clams. He started with a pushcart, shucking clams for happy customers. Demand grew to the point he had to recruit his son. Soon, the pushcart was not enough and they opened the first Biggie’s Clam Bar, right here on Madison Street.
Three generations later, the strict standards laid down by the original Biggie’s are what keeps driving Biggie’s forward. These include excellent, friendly customer service; the freshest, highest quality ingredients; and a comfortable, casual place in which to enjoy it.
