Pride Bar Crawl
Santa Barbara runs one of the most pleasant downtowns in California, and the Pride Bar Crawl uses the length of it. The route works lower State Street, a wide pedestrian-friendly run heading toward the water.
State Street carries the bars under Spanish colonial arcades, with side streets holding a few of the better rooms. The whole stretch is built for walking, which is why a routed crawl works here better than in most cities.
June on the Central Coast can bring the marine layer in the mornings, but the evenings clear and stay mild. It is close to ideal weather for a night spent moving between bars on foot.
Our hosts run the State Street route with the stops arranged beforehand. Specials are confirmed at each bar and one wristband covers every door on the route.

Is State Street closed to cars?
Large stretches have been pedestrianised since 2020, with outdoor seating in the roadway. For a walking route that is a real advantage over any comparable coastal downtown.
Does June Gloom affect the evening?
It can. Coastal fog rolls in during June evenings and drops the temperature into the low sixties, so the warm afternoon is not what you will be walking in at eleven.
What is the Funk Zone?
The block of tasting rooms and bars between State Street and the beach. It is adjacent to the route rather than part of it, and worth knowing about either way.
Does UCSB feed the Santa Barbara crowd?
Less than people assume. The campus and its student nightlife sit in Isla Vista, about ten miles west, and the academic year has ended by late June anyway.
Can I get to Santa Barbara by train?
Yes. The Pacific Surfliner stops downtown within walking distance of lower State Street, which makes this one of the easier California routes to reach without a car.
