Portland, Maine has a bar scene far larger than the city’s population should support, and on Saturday, July 4, 2027 the official Red, White and Brew bar crawl runs through the heart of it. The route works the Old Port, where cobblestone streets and brick warehouses hold one of the densest drinking districts in New England.
The Old Port is the entire route and it does not need help. Wharf Street, Fore Street and the lanes running down toward the working waterfront pack bars, breweries and oyster rooms into a few blocks. Maine’s brewing reputation means the beer here is genuinely excellent, and on the Fourth every one of those taps is pouring.
July is the two-week window Portland waits for. The city fills with visitors from the whole eastern seaboard, the harbor is busy from dawn, and the Fourth lands in the best stretch of the summer. Cobblestones and coastal air make for a better walking night than almost anywhere.
In 2027 the Semiquincentennial marks 250 years of American independence, and Portland paid a heavy price in that war. In October 1775 the Royal Navy bombarded and burned the town, then called Falmouth, in an action that hardened colonial opinion and was cited among the grievances against the Crown. The town rebuilt, took the name Portland, and Maine became a state in 1820.

Portland's Stars and Stripes Spectacular puts fireworks over Casco Bay from the Eastern Promenade on the holiday itself, which is the Sunday rather than the Saturday the crawl runs.
Which part of Portland Maine does the route use?
