Fargo has built a genuinely good downtown over the past twenty years, and Broadway is the street that carries it. The Oktoberfest Bar Crawl runs that stretch, covering the city’s bar scene in one walkable line.
Broadway holds the bars, restaurants and taprooms along a single run through downtown. North Dakota’s German and Scandinavian heritage runs deep, and the Germans from Russia settlement history in this region makes an October beer festival feel native rather than borrowed.
October in the Red River Valley is the last stretch before a serious winter. The harvest is wrapping up, the nights turn sharp, and the city makes the most of every comfortable evening it has left.
Our hosts run the Broadway route with short walks and the stein hold staged indoors. Specials are confirmed with each bar in advance and one wristband covers every door.

Is a Bison home game worth planning around?
Yes. NDSU football fills downtown Fargo in a way few other things do, and a home Saturday at the Fargodome means the Broadway bars have been busy since well before the crawl starts.
Is Broadway walkable end to end?
Comfortably. Downtown Fargo concentrates its bars along a few blocks of Broadway and the cross streets, so the whole route works on foot with no rides between stops.
Where do I park in downtown Fargo?
The downtown ramps just off Broadway are the reliable option and cost very little. Street parking downtown is free in the evenings but the good spots go once the dinner crowd arrives.
How cold does Fargo get in late September?
Cold after dark, often into the 30s and 40s, with wind across the Red River valley making it feel worse. Every stop is indoors, so plan a layer for the walking.

Yes, 21 and over. Every participating bar checks a valid government-issued photo ID at the door regardless of your wristband, and Fargo door staff card carefully near the university crowd.
